N900 Launched. Omnia Pro order Cancelled.

Nokia have sent out a press release launching the N900 and Maemo 5

Nokia N900 running Maemo5

It’s going to be available in October for 500 Euro which means my Omnia Pro order has (within the last few minutes) been cancelled. I don’t see any reason to wait for the Omnia Pro when the Nokia will have…

  • A better camera
  • A much more powerful processor
  • An exciting user and developer community
  • A much better browser (Mozilla based)
  • HSPA data capability

I’ve updated the N900 product page over at UMPCPortal to reflect the new information. Have added some videos too. The next step is to try and get to Nokia World in Stuttgart next week.

How do feel about the Omnia Pro now?  I wonder how Samsung feels about the Omnia Pro now.

    Hello Chippy:

The Omnia Pro smartphone has 720 video resolution.
    While the Nokia N900 has 848 X 480 video.

The Omnia Pro has an 8 mega pixel camera.
The Nokia has a 5 mega pixel camera.

Just a couple of difference to look at.

    Regards Robert

The Omnia Pro has 5mp cam and I don’t think it can do 720p res video. I could be wrong. Lets just say that the cams are similar.

What would be the point in 720p video on an 800×480 screen?

I was also waiting for the omnia pro, but now I’m definitely getting the N900. I just hope we’ll see it in the UK sooner rather than later.

There’s two. 1 – that you can play content up to 720p without having to re-encode it an 2 (not applicable here) if you have digital output, you can view it on an external screens.

What’s up with the 848×480@25 video recording. On top of being an aspect ratio that is neither 16:9 or 16:10, an OMAP3 can handle higher rates than that.

I certainly understand your decision to do for the N900 instead, Chippy. I’m going to wait for more info on software support first. If they only offer a video player that is feature equivalent to the S60 one, then I’m not going to be too pleased, 90% of my music is in FLAC format.

The media player is nothing like the player on S60 but you’re right, we should all wait for some more detailed info about the software layers.
I’m trying hard to get to Nokia World next week but the PR people are saying ‘no’ at the moment. Grrr.

Sounds like typical Nokia. Maybe you should pretend you’re there to cover their netbook for UMPCPortal (although in reality no one cares about that).

One more reason for me to put off the Samsung Mondi web browsing review for another day (or week). :)

so are u going to rename this website to myn900.com?

OmniaPro B7610 is a more open platform, on the hardware end. Nokia has a history of closed hardware specs, and unsupported software. Anyone want to port Linux to the OmniaPro and make it better than the N900? ;)

Assumedly you could install Android onto the N900. I’m not sure what the resistive touchscreen support is like, though, although the OMAP3 processor and WVGA resolution are supported.
