Thanks to the responsiveness and flexibility of the nice people at Smartphoneshop.nl, I’ve secured myself an Omnia Pro (actually a Dutch Omnia Qwerty – navigating that will be fun until I can get an English ROM onto it!) that I’ll be picking up tomorrow afternoon. The N900 is still on the list but this is a device I need to buy for my work on my mobile computing websites. It would have been silly not to buy one having put so much work into this blog and as the MID and smartphone sector are meeting in the middle now, I need to brush up on my sub 4″ screen and mobile operating system skills! Well at least that’s how i’m justifying it to myself. (How will you justify yours!)
What it means is that I’ll be knocking out a lot of detailed posts and videos over the coming weeks and paying closer attention to the MyOmniaPro forums to answer your questions. You can expect an unboxing video tomorrow, a first impressions post, a photo shoot and then, later in the week, a live hands-on session (possibly on Friday) where I go over some details on the device in a live video and chat session. You’ll be able to ask me questions about the device and i’ll run a few live tests. E.g. browsing speed and accuracy, video playback performances, keyboard tests etc. If i’m lucky, my partner in online video crime, JKK from JKKMobile.com will join me with his HTC Touch Pro2 and Nokia N97. It will be the perfect shootout so bring a beer and enjoy the fun. I’ll confirm the date and time for this later in the week.
Note: Next week I am in San Fransisco at the Intel Developer Forum learning about the latest MID / Phone developments from Intel. You can follow all the news from IDF over at MIDMoves.com.

another one tempted :>
good to hear that, as for me 3 most important questions for which I’m trying to get some info from peshir but I dunno how long it’ll take till he answers. So the questions are:
- is *#0*# wroking? (if interested can give you later some other samsung codes to test)
- keyboard backlight
- how laggy is this one on the final fw release
regards,
stn

*#0*# is a test function right?
Keyboard backlight is an important one for me (in bed when wife is sleeping!)
I’ll be checking UI ‘lag’ (touchscreen actions) but I don’t expect it to be up to N900 or iphone standards.

yes *#0*# is one of samsung “universal” codes this one enables so called LCD Test but apart from LCD itself you can get (depending on a handset) set of other test, like camera tests, vibration tests etc, On omnia 2 this also enables a shortcut to compass app so I hope should it here.

I’m so jealous =(. I wish they’d release it in the UK.

Clove.co.uk are saying ‘MID September.’ I’ve asking for an update. Expansys will be updating me when they have news too. It won’t be loong for the UK i’m sure.

The thing is I want it on contract and, ideally, I’d like to try it out in a shop first as well. But let us know what clove.co.uk and Expansys say
. play.com had it listed for 30/09/09 but now they’re saying 07/10/09, perhaps to do with Windows Mobile 6.5?

Looks like it’s coming out of Italy. NL, Italy, UK, Germany. Always the first countries to get phones in Europe. The craziest mobile fans live there!
