Heading back home from IDF.

I just wanted to write you guys a short note to say that my work here at Intel’s developer pragram is done and i’ll be back in the Omnia Pro seat by Tuesday of next week.

IDF was very interesting indeed. Not just for MID fans but for high-end smartphone fans too. I saw the first ever public demo of a smartphone-style device based on Intel’s Moorestown platform and the Moblin 2 OS. It really does work in devices that are smartphone-sized! We have to look towards the second-half of 2010 for the first devices but at that point, the processing power should be 2-3x what you’ll see on a Cortex A8 platform and 4-6x what we’re seeing on the Omnia Pro. Where the Omnia is taking 20 seconds or more to load a web page, a Moorestown-based device will be able to do that in about 10 seconds. We’ll also be getting hardware encoding for 720p video too, full Flash, Adobe Air and Silverlight support and at 720p quality hardware decoded video. Don’t forget that Moblin is LSB-compliant so it will be hitting the ground with hundreds of applications. 2010 will be a very interesting time for the high-end smartphone market.

In the meantime though, we have the Omnia Pro.

In two weeks i’m travelling to Amsterdam for the Maemo summit and hands-on with the N900 (and a possible review loaner) so it will be very intersting to put the 400 Euro Omnia Pro next to the 500 Euro (street prices have dropped in Germany) N900.

Expect a video overview of the Omnia Pro on Wed or Thursday next week with a review following soon after that. Thanks for your patience!

Omnia Qwerty / B7610 from Holland – Fully English-compatible.

manual

I have some unboxing photos ready for you in the next post but first I wanted to report that I’ve successfully changed the language from Dutch to English. There’s also an English manual included so if you really can’t wait for the Omnia Pro in your country and you’re happy with QWERTY and English language, buy one from Holland!

Update: Other languages available through TouchWiz. (They take about 10 minutes to install)

English, French, Italian, German, Russian, Norwegian, Dutch, Czech, Greek, Spanish, Portugese, Finnish, Danish, Polish, Swedish. Lots of options there, just don’t let your mate get hold of your Omnia Pro and switch it to Greek ;-)

The Omnia Pro B7610 is here!

I have a busy afternoon/evening ahead of me due to an Archos press conference and a live session I’m doing at UMPCPortal later so I may not get to make a short presentation video as soon as I had hoped but I’ll try and get some pics/video/thoughts out before the evening is up.

I have had it in my hand but still havent turned it on. It takes a lot of will power to write a blog post before diving in to a gadget like this!

Omnia Pro – 149Euro + contract with Vodafone Germany. Available mid-Sept

Update: Vodafone have removed the product from their website.

Vodafone Germany held their press conference at IFA today and a quick look at the status of the Omnia Pro on their website confirms that it’s moved from ‘coming soon’ to available.

149 for a 2 year commitment is certainly not cheap but if you’re coming up for renewal time, like i am, it’s quite tempting. Availability is mid Spetember (just a few weeks away.)

Omnia Pro hits retail in Holland as ‘Omnia QWERTY’

Its happened! The Omnia Pro is finally available…in Holland…as the Omnia Qwerty. It launched alongside the Omnia II at the ‘Miljonair Fair‘ on Saturday and was available as of yesterday. There were a few lucky bloggers present to capture the action on Saturday although not much information yet.

Allabouphones.nl have a brief report of hands-on time but don’t really have much detail to report. They say that the demo version didn’t have the final firmware but that it was fast. Phew! They have some nice pics too.

Ron Smeets of MobileCowboys was also lucky enough to get some lens-time with the Qwerty. Hopefully he’ll get a review device very soon so keep an eye on that website.

At the very least we now know it’s real, pricing is ranging from about 430-450 Euro and by the end of the week, maybe even by the end of Wednesday, we should be getting hands-on information from owners. We should also have the hands-on reports from people using the N900 at Nokia World so it’s going to be fun to comapare YouTube vids!

Here’s one Dutch twitterer that’s waiting for his Omnia Qwerty!

Me,  i’m working on getting one to review here on MyOmniaPro but haven’t had confirmation yet.
